No it is not rare more or less 30% of the population is type O positive. O negative accounts for roughly 7% of the population in North America and is the global donor..
You can receive only O+ or O -. In a non immergent situation you would bring back type specific blood (O+). It doesn't really take tremendously long for the lab to type and crossmatch your blood.
O+ is incredibly common...you are a general donor since you have no antibodies, but you can just recieve O+ blood...don't worry...its my blood type too :)
